  1. Beetles (Coleoptera)

Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa)

Beetles (Coleoptera) > Leaf Beetles (Chrysomelidae) > Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa)

Despite its appearance, this beetle is flightless with a smoothed elytra which is fused together. This is one of the largest leaf beetles.

The common name describes how it exudes a foul smelling red liquid from its mouth when alarmed.

It can be seen between April-August, walking slowly over turf and bare soil in grassy places. It feeds on bedstraws.
