Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis)

Gannets, Cormorants and Pelicans (Pelecaniformes) > Cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae) > Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis)

Prefers rocky or cliff coastal sites. Breeding areas in the UK are Cornwall up the West Coast to Scotland. Rarely seen inland. Similar to Cormorant but without the large skin patch (Gular pouch) behind the bill. The bill is also more slender and the bird is not as large.

Thank you Jason. I am afraid I made the greatest mistake in birding with these. I was so used to Cormorants being in the harbour that I convinced myself it was. After-all, Shag in the harbour are not that common. Still, I must remember to keep an open mind and change the caption. Thanks also for your encouragement. It is important to share and it is also important to receive feedback. I can learn from this.

That's a fabulous image of a juvenile Shag catching prey in Langstone Harbour! Many other great shots, keep it up. I know you will.
