Volucella zonaria

True Flies (Diptera) > Hoverfly (Syrphidae) > Volucella zonaria

This fly is very similar to Volucella inanis but larger at 15.5-19.5mm. Other Physical differences are that the second sternite (On abdomen) is Chestnut Brown and not yellow. The second sternite on the underside is a black 'V' and not yellow. The wings are amber infused.

The adults are often seen feeding on nectar from flowers, like this specimen, which was feeding on Buddlea flowers. The larvae are scavengers and predators in nests of social wasps.
