Aggregates Quay, Langstone Harbour

The wharf lies between the Hermitage stream to the left and another stream (I do not know the name of - if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated) to the right. A coaster will arrive every few days and deposit its load on the hard standing. Dumper trucks move the load into a hopper (seen below) from where it is moved on belts and dropped into the appropriate storage site.

Unloading now completed, one end of the black pipes is lowered into the sea and water is pumped into the hold to clean it.

The hopper on the jig feeds this discharge system. Note the tracked scoop moving the discharged material to the the land based hopper.

The scoop, with its jaws open, is lowered into the hold to bring up another load.

The gantry gopper has moved forward and the contents of the scoop are dropped in.

The scoop has picked up the load from the hold and is taken to the top of its travel. The hopper on the rails of the jig will move forward to accept the contents of the scoop.

Now into Langstone Harbour. It will now follow the marked channel to the harbour mouth before entering the Solent between Hayling Island and Portsmouth.

Having moved astern to leave the wharf and swing the bow round into Hermitage stream proper, the ship now moves down the estuary towards Langstone Harbour shipping channel.
