Budds Farm Southmoor

This site is owned by Southern Water and is a water treatment facility. The east side of the site contains a large lagoon which now plays no part in the treatment cycle but the whole area is now managed by the company as a haven for wildlife. There is no public access to the site but views of the lagoon area can be had from the 'mound' in the Southmoor SSSI site.

A group of Shovelers with a solitary Pochard female (lower left). The Pochard arrive at the lagoon in Sept and will over-winter here. They are resident all the year round but their numbers are increased by birds arriving from the NE and E.

The Shoveler Ducks will spend the winter months at the Lagoon. They are normally seen in the Harbour and local lakes. The numbers increase with migratory birds from the East.<br />
A bird, still in Summer plumage, is seen here coming into land to join two others.

There are ducks in the lagoon all the year round but the population increases significantly in the autumn as birds arrive to over-winter in the sheltered lagoon. In this image are three male and two female Mallard. Also, below left, a solitary Tufted Duck.

The Canada Geese have arrived back in Budds Farm Lagoon. They will probably stay until chased off by the resident pair of swans next spring.

At high tide in Langstone Harbour, the waders seek places to roost until the tide recedes again. The tree in Budds Farm lagoon is a favourite spot as the area is very rarely disturbed. I have seen up to 6 Little Egret and 2 Grey Heron in this tree at any one time.
