This site was developed to povide nesting sites for the Little Tern which arrive each year, during the summer months, to breed in Langstone harbour. A deep lagoon surrounds two man-made gravel islands (North and South) which the Tern find attractive for nesting. The lagoon is refreshed each high tide through two weirs at the seaward side. These weirs additionally ensure the water level is retained at low tide.

It had greater success this time. It seems to have attempted this quite early as its feathers have not yet fully formed and it's appearance ids quite scruffy with the mix of down and feathers.

Having climbed back to the top of the island, this chick tried again.

The chick at the water's edge had just taken off for the first time, crash landed on my side of the lagoon, flew back and crash landed again.<br />
The air was full of alarm calls from four Tern adults which buzzed me to protect the chick.

At this stage of their lives, the birds are extremely varied in plumage and some would ague that this is their most attractive stage.
