Burnet Moths

Brightly coloured moths with slightly clubbed antenna. Flight is slow and drifting although the wing beats are rapid. The larvae pupates in a a paperlike cocoon, usually on grass stems. Following emergence, the moths seek food and a mate at the earliest opportunity.

A pair of Burnet on a grass stem. These moths are so docile that they can be picked up without them attempting to fly away.

The pupae lies within a papery cocoon. The pupae bursts through before the moth emerges. The moth has already left leaving the empty pupae behind.
