  • Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). Copyright Peter Drury 2010<br /> A very popular plant which has a distinct scent. This plant is used in the production of fragrances and perfume. It is also a medicinal plant in India to treat sore throats and tonsilitus. The French make syrup from extract of this plant which is used in cake making. The plants are low growing and spread outwards by runners. The flowers can be either deep purple or, as in this case, white.

  • Query. Copyright 2009 Peter Drury<br /> This appears to be a pupae within a cocoon. The outline of the insect can clearly be seen. The white area in the vicinity of the thorax is also of interest.

A large colony of Little Blues reside on the lower slopes of Portsdown Hill in what was the Chalk Quarry.
