  • Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). Copyright Peter Drury 2010<br /> A very popular plant which has a distinct scent. This plant is used in the production of fragrances and perfume. It is also a medicinal plant in India to treat sore throats and tonsilitus. The French make syrup from extract of this plant which is used in cake making. The plants are low growing and spread outwards by runners. The flowers can be either deep purple or, as in this case, white.

  • Kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria) <br /> This is the sole food plant of the Little Blue Butterfly (Cupido minimus). A large colony of Little Blues reside on the lower slopes of Portsdown Hill in what was the Chalk Quarry.
