Metellina segmentata

Spiders (Aranea) > Long-jawed Orb Weaver (Tetragnathidae) > Metellina segmentata
These spiders are very variable in colour but the pattern is mostly constant. They create a web with no centre (Orb weaving) which is attached at an angle to various types of vegetation. Common in the spring and autumn. The male has longer legs than the female and late summer-autumn, can be seen near a female's web. When the female grabs and wraps an insect, the male mates with the female as she is pre-occupied.

The spider is in the process of moulting. I had not realised this until I reviewed the images I had taken. A golden opportunity missed.
