This was the first week of the Santa Specials and only one train was being used to provide three return services from Alresford and Meadstead and Four Marks. The loco 9F arrives with the return leg of the second service. It is seen here being routed into the Down platform.

These handles carry out the same tensioning function for the local signals. These runs are quite short this method is sufficient for them.

The red box at the window is the communication point between the Ropley and Alresford boxes. The bell push is the upper centre and the M slots house the keys for the single line between these stations. To the right of this, the black box is used to tension the cable between the box and the outer home signal. The cable run to the signal is long and tensioning has to take place when temperature variations cause the cable to expand or contract.

This panel above the frame and indicators shows the track layout and signals and points. The numbers against these refer to the levers used to operate tham. The dark oval objects on the track plan are indicator lights to tell the signalman which sections of the track are occupied. They illuminate if the track is occupied.by a train or rolling stock.

Here is another view of the indicator panel above the lever frame. All the necessary levers have been pulled and you will see that the needles on the two left hand dials (Outer Home and Inner Home) are now indicating to the right (OFF). All the others are pointing to the left (ON).<br />
The brass switch in the centre of the panel operates a bell which allows the signalman to alert the station staff of an incoming train.

The outer home is quite a distance from the box and therefore it takes some effort to move the lever.

The Ropley box has just sent the bell code to the Alresford box offering a train to Alresford. The signalman has repeated the two bell push response to tell Ropley that Alresford is ready to accept the train. The next task is to set the signals and route to bring the train in. Here, the lever operating the outer home signal is being pulled to set the signal from ON to OFF.

A general view of the lever frame and indicators. The red levers are to operate the signals, the blue levers operate the points, the black levers operate the catch points and the white lever is a spare. The dials abobe the lever frame indicate the status of a signal -On being at danger and Off being clear to pass.

Letter box dating back to Queen Victoria's reign is mounted in the wall at the station. Although this is a private box it can be used by the public and any mail posted bears the mark of the railway before being passed on to the Post Office for handling in the normal way. The box is on loan to the Mid Hants Railway and was provided by Mr W Sait.

Looking down Platform 1 (the departure platform) from the station entrance and toeards the end of the line and sidings. Some platform furniture and the station footbridge can be seen in this view.<br />
The building between the station building and the footbridge is the old goods shed. Now a museum. I shall take some pictures inside this building on my next visit.
