As the train arrives at Medstead & Four Marks, the single line token for the section from Alton must be surrendered and a new token for the single line to Ropley must be received before the train can leave the station. Here, the fireman holds out the Alton Token and thrusts his other arm out to receive the Ropley Token. The station master is standing on the platform to swap tokens. This method of token swapping is fine for low speed lines. These days, where physical tokens are still used, locomotives are fitted with a mechanical apparatus to carry out this function.

Approaching the station and preparing for the single line token swap. This is explained more fully in the next image. The yellow ended rail vehicle that can be seen here is not obstructing the line. It is in fact in the long siding and the station loop line crosses over to the right hand line before the siding.
